Wayward Saints to perform docudrama
WEIRTON — In recognition of Martin Luther King Day, the Dunbar Recreation Center will present a special docudrama for the community, entitled “Wanted by the FBI: James Earl Ray.”
The docudrama-formatted program focuses on the events surrounding the assassination of King and the final sermon he gave on the night prior to his assassination. The performance will begin at noon on Monday at the center, located at 300 Kessel St. in Weirton. Preceding the show, a luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the center. The performance was originally to be delivered following the annual MLK Walk along Weir Avenue and concluding at the center. However, officials announced this year’s walk has been canceled due to the cold temperatures.
The performance is open to the public and free of charge to attend, although donations to support the center are appreciated, organizers commented.
Performed in the style of live radio, “Wanted by the FBI: James Earl Ray” is being co-sponsored by the Dunbar Recreation Center and the Ohio Valley Cloak and Dagger Co.
“The play recounts in dramatic fashion the aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, and the manhunt for his killer, James Earl Ray,” officials stated.
The performance stars the Wayward Saints theatrical troupe. Participating will include Rob DeSantis, Bethany Fernbaugh, Pete Fernbaugh, Robert J. Gaudio, Jalen McCrary and Linda Spencer. Those attending will have the opportunity to listen to the first speech written by King’s wife, Caretta Scott King, following the death of her husband, officials noted.
The center first opened its doors in late 1944, serving as the headquarters of the Dunbar Parent Teacher Association, and hosting a variety of events contributing to the advancement of Weirton’s African-American community. It was officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.
