A decade-long project
The Weirton Kiwanis Club turned one of its recent meetings into a working activity, as members assembled 300 piggybanks that will be delivered to the Labor and Delivery Deptartment at WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center. The contribution is done annually by the club and is now in its 10th year for this project. A penny is inserted into each bank, along with a card reading, “May the penny in this piggybank be a first step toward saving for your child’s future education.” When the new mothers depart the hospital, they are given by staff members one of the banks to take home. It is the hope of the club the families will continue to add to the bank throughout the years. Weirton Kiwanis meets at noon every Tuesday at Undo’s restaurant in the Holiday Inn on Three Springs Drive. Among those taking part in the project were, from left, Donna Calvert, Gary Mastromichalis, President Ernie Nicholas and Angie Goettel.
