Ballet set to give four performances

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Ballet Theater’s “America 250” with the PBT orchestra, opens Feb. 20 at the Benedum Center.

This mixed repertory production will run for four performances during the weekend of Feb. 20-22.

As an ode to America’s 250th anniversary, the family-friendly program will include four classical and contemporary Americana-themed ballets that honor the American spirit.

The works will be accompanied by live music from the PBT orchestra.

The program includes “Company B,” “Stars and Stripes Pas de Deux,” “Three Preludes” and “The Mighty Casey.”

Performances are scheduled to take place on the following times and dates: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20, 2 p.m. Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 and 2 p.m. Feb. 22.

Groups which have a certain amount of people may be eligible to receive up to 50 percent off the ticket sale price, according to officials.

• An opening night preview to hear from choreographers, stagers and creative artists will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the multi-purpose room, located on the second floor of the Benedum Center.

• A family workshop for children to better understand the performance, offering storytime, dancing and a chance to see Nutcracker costumes and props up close will take place at 12:45 p.m. Feb. 21 in the multi-purpose room.

• Tea with the artistic director will give audiences an opportunity to grab their favorite drink at the bar and join McKinney for an informal conversation before the performance. The event will take place at 6:45 p.m. Feb. 21 in the theater.

• An artist question-and-answer period will allow audience members to to chat with the theater’s artists about their roles in the performance, how they prepare for the ballet and what it is like working with choreographers. This event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 on the orchestra level of the theater.

• Curtains Up! is a special opportunity to see dancers warming up before the show and then chat with the staff about the production. This event will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 in the theater.

• An audio-described performance for patrons who have blindness or low vision or anyone interested in listening to a live narrative of the production will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 22.

Upcoming performances this season will include: “Spring Mix,” April 10-12 at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center; and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with the PBT Orchestra, May 15-17 at the Benedum Center.
