Seniors set to celebrate Valentine’s Day
TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met Jan. 23, with President Barbara Pritts opening the meeting by welcoming members and guest Ed Sheets.
Co-Chaplain Mary Lou Emery gave the blessing before the meal, which featured submarine sandwiches and a variety of side dishes and desserts. Following dinner, the group thanked the kitchen committee, comprised of Hank and Laura Sheets and several volunteers.
Don Pritts sold 50/50 tickets. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, after which Secretary Karen Martin read the minutes of the Jan. 9 meeting. Treasurer Lynn Miller gave the financial report, which was filed for audit.
Pritts announced she submitted a letter to Toronto Mayor John Parker and the city requesting grant funds for 2026. Funds are used to help cover the costs of meals and travel.
Social Secretary Mary Ann Landerfield announced local activities that are available to seniors.
Landerfield announced the February kitchen committee will consist of members Marsha McConnell, Mary Lou Deku, Bob Deku, Lynn Miller, Patty Deptula and Tom Deptula.
Hank Sheets was named member of the month. He stated he is most proud of helping his children and students understand their strengths and experience success.
“There is nothing like the feeling you get with a job well done,” Sheets told the group.
The evening’s activity involved predicting the correct price of five commonly-purchased grocery items. Winners were Ethel Stevens, Patty Deptula, Bea Lytle and Louie Nelson.
The winners of the 50/50 drawing were Kenny Emery and McConnell.
Following announcements and the joke of the day, the meeting was adjourned.
It was announced the next meeting will take place on Feb. 13, with members reminded it will serve as the seniors’ Valentine’s Day meeting. Anyone who is 55 years of age or older and who resides in Ohio is welcome to attend.
Bingo was played by those who stayed after the meeting to participate. Winners were Mary Ann Cordier, Betty Mossor, Landerfield, Jackie Porter, Stevens, Mary Jane Tottka, Lucy Timko and Candi Murphy.
