Post 33 Auxiliary plans ceremony
STEUBENVILLE — American Legion Auxiliary Unit 33 will hold its annual Memorial Day commemoration at noon May 24 at the Steubenville Marina.
Safety forces and others in attendance, and a trumpet player will play taps. A wreath will be thrown into the river.
Members will be distributing poppies to support our disabled veterans Friday in front of Downtown Bakery, the Jefferson County Courthouse and M&M Hardware.
Distinguished family recognition
WELLSBURG — The Distinguished Family of Service commemoration will be held at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day at the Foundry Church in Wellsburg.
Sponsored by the Brooke Hills Park Memorial Foundation, the event recognizes families that had multiple service members and had members who had been killed in action. scheduled to be honored this year are the Casini, Dalesio and Lupinettl families.
The event is open to the public.
New books at the library
STEUBENVILLE — The following books are new at the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County:
Fiction
“The Bush Tea Murder” by Ashley-Ruth M. Bernier — Food journalist Naomi Sinclair returns to Saint Thomas expecting a quiet visit but instead finds herself drawn into a series of escalating crimes, from petty theft to murder, that threaten her tight-knit community.
“Folk-Spelled” by Forthright — In an alternate Sherlock Holmes universe, cursed former officer Varti Weller, who can only speak in lies, is pulled from evidence duty into a case involving grisly murders and a job offer tied to proving Holmes is not a killer.
“26 Beauties” by James Patterson — The Women’s Murder Club investigates the disappearance of 26 young women in San Francisco as multiple cases involving missing and deceased women begin to appear connected.
“Clawed and Dangerous” by Rita Mae Brown — In Crozet, Virginia, Harry and Susan plan a Halloween party while a series of suspicious deaths in town suggests something more sinister may be at work.
Bookmobile schedule
STEUBENVILLE — The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County bookmobile will be off the road Monday.
Stops on Tuesday, May 19, include Amsterdam at Grammy’s Diner, Bergholz VFD and home delivery on Red Dog Road. On Wednesday, May 20, home deliveries begin at 8 a.m., followed by a stop at the Mingo Senior Center from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Thursday, May 21, stops include Briarwood from 3 to 4 p.m. and Ridgewood Apartments in Wintersville from 4 to 5 p.m. On Friday, May 22, stops include Brush Creek Community Building, Hammondsville Post Office and Prime Time in Hammondsville, followed by Riverside Apartments in Toronto.
Brooke county library offers events, programs and weekly activities
WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library is offering a variety of programs, activities and services in the coming week, including book discussions, children’s programming and ongoing community events.
“Adventure Snacks” will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in the River Room. Participants will sample snacks from different countries and take part in trivia and cultural activities. Registration is required at 304-737-1551 or brookecountylibs.org/events.
“Mah Jongg Fridays” will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. each Friday. Participants may bring their own tiles or learn to play with assistance available. No registration is required.
“Play & Connect” will be held Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the children’s room for children ages birth to 6 with caregiver supervision.
