Concert postponed
STEUBENVILLE — The thunderstorms that hit the Tri-State Area Thursday afternoon forced officials at Historic Fort Steuben to postpone the concert that had been scheduled for the Berkman Amphitheater.
Restless Hearts and Aristotle Jones and the Appalachian Soul Band have been rescheduled for Aug. 13, according to Paul Zuros, executive director at the fort.
The series will continue next Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. with the Rat Pack Tribute, featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe, and the Vince Villanova Big Band.
Shelter open house set
STEUBENVILLE — The Community Action Agency of Columbiana County Inc. has finalized the process of opening a homeless shelter in Jefferson County.
The 22-bed facility will house men, women and families. The site location is 142 N. Sixth St., Steubenville.
An open house event will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday for the community to have the opportunity to tour the shelter, meet staff, and learn what can be done to support those facing a housing crisis. The tentative opening date for the facility is June 22.
Retired teachers meet
TORONTO — The Jefferson County Retired Teacher Association met May 12 at the Riverview Global Methodist Church in Toronto. The meeting was called to order by President Gina Judy.
Larry Coleman informed members 3,538 volunteer hours had been submitted. Barbara Pritts reported on the May primary ballot and two House Bills currently being considered for vote. Connie Crawford informed members they had 80 second-graders tour the school House. It will be open for tours the second Sunday of each month during the Summer,
June Logan, Ohio Retired Teachers Association liaison for Northeast Ohio, informed members that HB 719 will reverse HB 717 to keep the original STRS board. She suggested contacting state Rep. Ron Ferguson, R-Wintersville, to let him know of our concerns.
Dave Nicholson introduced the main speaker, Bobbijon Bauman of Sycamore Center in Steubenville. The center was started in 2018 and services 500 kids a week with various classes. One hundred volunteers from local colleges and individuals help with the classes. Summer camp and meals are provided during the summer.
The community service project was canned fruit for WEBA.
McDonald’s restaurants to donate portion of sales to OVAC All-Star Band
WHEELING — McDonald’s owner/operators across the Ohio Valley will donate 20 percent of app-based sales June 18 to support the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference All-Star Marching Band.
Fifteen participating restaurants will take part in the Digital Fundraiser Day, continuing a 45-year tradition of supporting the OVAC All-Star Band through fundraising and scholarships.
The band, made up of students from schools across southeastern Ohio and northern West Virginia, performs at halftime during the OVAC All-Star Football Game, scheduled for July 18 at Wheeling Island Stadium.
A $1,000 scholarship will also be awarded to one band member, with a check presentation planned during halftime of the game.
Participating owner/operators said each restaurant will donate a minimum of $250.
“We’re so excited to have these connections in the communities that we serve,” Wheeling McDonald’s owner/operator Bob Stoltz said. “As McDonald’s owner/operators within the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference, we are proud to come together to show our support for our young musicians.”
Participating locations include restaurants in Woodsfield, Bellaire, Martins Ferry, Caldwell, Belmont, St. Clairsville, Barnesville, Wheeling, Moundsville, Triadelphia, Beverly, Follansbee, Pittsburgh and Oakdale.
Follansbee council to hold special meeting Monday
FOLLANSBEE — The City of Follansbee will hold a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. Monday.
The agenda includes advertising for police officer hiring, land acquisition and the appointment of a city clerk.
City officials said the meeting will be held at City Hall.
Juneteenth Celebration theme is ‘My Black Is Beautiful’
STEUBENVILLE — The two-day Juneteenth Celebration themed “My Black Is Beautiful” is scheduled for June 19-20 at Second Baptist Church, 717 Adams St., Steubenville.
The event will run from noon to 8 p.m. both days and will feature food vendors, games, activities for all ages and live entertainment. Organizers describe the celebration as a weekend focused on community, culture and connection.
Festivities on June 19 will begin with a noon parade starting at the Fort Steuben area and proceeding to the church, followed by an opening ceremony. A special surprise guest storyteller is also planned.
Entertainment on June 19 will include performances by Elisha Fletcher at 3 p.m. and Tara Ekins at 5 p.m. The musical group “The Stereos” is scheduled to headline at 7 p.m.
DJ A Love will provide entertainment during the celebration.
