Verizon stores to host free backpack giveaway
STEUBENVILLE -- Verizon Wireless stores in the Wheeling and Steubenville area will host a free backpack giveaway at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 26, as part of Round Room LLC's 14th annual "School Rocks Backpack Giveaway."
Hundreds of families are expected to receive free backpacks during the event, which will take place at more than 1,200 participating stores nationwide. Round Room, an authorized Verizon retailer, will distribute more than $3 million worth of backpacks to students across the country.
Any remaining backpacks will be donated to local schools selected by each store.
Since the event began, Round Room has provided more than 1.5 million children with backpacks.
Local participating locations include:
– Verizon, 2203 Sunset Blvd. Ste. 3, Steubenville
– Verizon, 864 Main St., Wintersville
– Verizon, 40 Fort Henry Road, Triadelphia
– Verizon, 241 Three Springs Drive Ste. 2021, Weirton
Organizers said the giveaway aims to help families facing financial challenges during back-to-school shopping season.
Brooke health board to meet
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Board of Health will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Brooke County Courthouse.
State Police announce sobriety checkpoint
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The West Virginia State Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 8 p.m. Aug. 7 to 2 a.m. Aug. 8 on West Virginia Route 2 near Jackson Street in New Cumberland.
Officials said the checkpoint is intended to deter impaired driving and improve highway safety. Motorists wishing to avoid the checkpoint may use alternate routes. Southbound traffic can detour via West Virginia Route 8 to North Chestnut Street, while northbound motorists can bypass the checkpoint by using Jackson Street to North Chestnut Street.
State police reminded motorists never to operate a vehicle after consuming drugs or alcohol.
Bookmobile schedule announced
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has announced its bookmobile schedule for the week of July 20-24.
The bookmobile will be off the road Monday.
Scheduled stops include Amsterdam at Grammy’s Diner from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Department from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, followed by home delivery on Red Dog Road at 12:15 p.m.
On Wednesday, home deliveries begin at 8 a.m., followed by a stop at the Mingo Senior Center from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Thursday’s schedule includes Briarwood from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Ridgewood Apartments in Wintersville from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday stops include the Brush Creek Community Building from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Hammondsville Post Office from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Prime Time in Hammondsville from noon to 1 p.m. and Riverside Apartments in Toronto from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Library announces new books
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has announced the following new additions to its collection.
“It Could Have Been Her” by Lisa Jewell -- Jane Trevally’s quiet afternoon takes a troubling turn when she finds a stray dog whose owner lives in a London home tied to her own dark past. Returning the dog forces Jane to confront unsettling memories and long-buried secrets.
