Classrooms and Community event set
STEUBENVILLE -- The second-annual Classrooms and Community event will be held Aug. 10 at the Main Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, 407 S. Fourth St.
The event will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will include giveaways of school supplies for teachers and students. The first 100 teachers will receive supplies and a chance at winning a $100 gift card. The first 500 students will receive supplies, a free hot dog, a bag of chips and a drink.
Teachers must show proof of employment.
Activities will include touch-a-truck, face painting, hair tinsel, music, food trucks, back-to-school library resources and more.
The event is being sponsored by the Jefferson County Young Professionals in partnership with the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

Field music and the Civil War
WHEELING -- Patrick Jones will be the speaker when the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable meets at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Ohio County Public Library.
A Pittsburgh native, Jones is a member the Camp Chase Fifes and Drums and Company I of the Irish Brigade’s 116th Pennsylvania Reenactors’ Regiment.
“Chunks of Pudding and Pieces of Pie -- the Role of Field Music During the American Civil War” will be the focus of his presentation. He will have original drums for display and demonstration.
Jones began his music career at 13, which led to the position of drum sergeant. He began his studies of transcribing percussion notation from various historical manuals and has delivered presentations to various U.S. drummer associations and Civil War roundtables. Jones teaches fifth-grade social studies and science in the Upper St. Clair School District.

Weir Class of 1963 Holds Reunion
WEIRTON -- The Weir High School Class of 1963 gathered July 25 at Undo’s in Weirton for its 63rd class reunion, billed as “Our Last Hoorah.”
Classmates attended from California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington.
David Javersak welcomed the group and gave the blessing. Following dinner, Janet (Dorsey) Stukins honored deceased classmates with a memorial tribute. Javersak then presented the evening program, “Change and Chance,” before classmates joined together to sing the Weir High School alma mater and fight song.
Milan “Lou” Ralich provided the sound system and oldies music for the evening.
The reunion committee included Karen (Baker) Bruno, Janet (Dorsey) Stukins, Naomi “Willie” Williamson Balt, Angela (Porco) Contumelio, Penny (Watson) Clark Cunningham, Juanita (Kokenos) Linn, Milan “Lou” Ralich, Jack Rowe and David Javersak.Faculty Fellows Named
STEUBENVILLE -- Franciscan University of Steubenville has named seven professors as its inaugural Be Light Faculty Fellows, recognizing sustained excellence in teaching, scholarship, service and leadership.
The program, established in 2026, honors faculty members whose work has strengthened academic programs, created opportunities for students and advanced the university's Catholic mission. Recipients were selected through a nomination process and review of their teaching, scholarship and service during the past three years.
The inaugural fellows are Dr. Katarzyna Dudek, associate professor of English; Dr. Logan Gage, professor of philosophy; Dr. Joanne Storm Gallagher, professor of psychology; Dr. Daniel Kuebler, professor of biology; Dr. Joseph Pathakamuri, professor of biology; Deacon Dr. Robert Rice, professor of catechetics; and Dr. Jeffrey Rohde, professor of chemistry.
Provost Dr. Stephen Hildebrand said the award recognizes faculty members who combine academic excellence with a commitment to Franciscan University's Catholic identity.
The fellowship program supports goals outlined in the university's 2024-2027 Be Light Strategic Plan.

Bookmobile Schedule Released
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has announced its upcoming Bookmobile schedule for the first week of August.
Stops include Country Club Manor from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3; the Mingo Senior Center from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5; and Our Place, 50+, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.
The Bookmobile also will participate in Wednesdays in Wintersville at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 5 and First Fridays in Steubenville at 6 p.m. Aug. 7.
Home deliveries are scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 5. The Bookmobile will be off the road Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Photo Entries Sought for Calendar
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is accepting submissions for its 24th annual Roadsides in Bloom calendar contest.
The free calendar showcases photographs of wildflowers growing naturally along West Virginia roadways. Entries are due by Sept. 11.
Photographs must be taken in West Virginia and submitted in landscape orientation with a resolution of at least 300 pixels per inch. The roadway must be clearly visible in the image and the wildflowers must be growing along the roadside.
Participants may submit up to three photographs electronically to dep.aah@wv.gov. Twelve winning images will be selected to represent the months of 2027, with one grand-prize photograph appearing on the cover.
Entrants must include contact information, the location and county where the photograph was taken, and a description of the featured wildflower.
Disc Golf Course Opening Planned
WHEELING -- Oglebay Park Resort will celebrate the opening of its new disc golf course with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 in conjunction with National Disc Golf Day.
The course is located near Oglebay's Par 3 Golf Course. Following the ceremony, longtime disc golf enthusiast and course donor Paul Ashmore will lead a free clinic for beginners.
The first 25 clinic participants will receive a complimentary Oglebay-branded disc golf disc while supplies last.
The new attraction features two nine-hole layouts with multiple tee and basket placements, allowing players to complete either a nine-hole or 18-hole round. The course is open daily from dawn to dusk and is available to both resort guests and the public.
The project was funded through gifts from Paul and Missy Ashmore, along with additional support from Russell and Christine Dunkin and Derrick and Morgan McKee.
Office Closing Announced
STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Water and Sewer District office will be closed to walk-in visitors and phone calls Tuesday for staff training.
Officials said regular operations will resume following the training session.
Online Fire Safety Survey Launched
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office has launched a digital Home Safety Survey designed to help residents identify potential fire hazards and improve home safety.
The interactive survey, available through the State Fire Marshal's website, takes about five minutes to complete and is open to homeowners and renters statewide.
State Fire Marshal Kenneth E. Tyree Jr. said the survey is intended to help families identify issues such as blocked escape routes and nonfunctioning smoke alarms before emergencies occur.
Survey participants receive immediate safety recommendations based on their responses. Officials also plan to use the data to identify fire safety trends and support community risk-reduction efforts.
Residents can access the survey through the State Fire Marshal's Office website.
