Classrooms and Community event set
STEUBENVILLE -- The second-annual Classrooms and Community event will be held Monday at the Main Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, 407 S. Fourth St.
The event will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will include giveaways of school supplies for teachers and students. The first 100 teachers will receive supplies and a chance at winning a $100 gift card. The first 500 students will receive supplies, a free hot dog, a bag of chips and a drink.
Teachers must show proof of employment.
Activities will include touch-a-truck, face painting, hair tinsel, music, food trucks, back-to-school library resources and more.
The event is being sponsored by the Jefferson County Young Professionals in partnership with the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

Field music and the Civil War
WHEELING -- Patrick Jones will be the speaker when the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ohio County Public Library.
A Pittsburgh native, Jones is a member the Camp Chase Fifes and Drums and Company I of the Irish Brigade’s 116th Pennsylvania Reenactors’ Regiment.
“Chunks of Pudding and Pieces of Pie -- the Role of Field Music During the American Civil War” will be the focus of his presentation. He will have original drums for display and demonstration.
Jones began his music career at 13, which led to the position of drum sergeant. He began his studies of transcribing percussion notation from various historical manuals and has delivered presentations to various U.S. drummer associations and Civil War roundtables. Jones teaches fifth-grade social studies and science in the Upper St. Clair School District.

SHS Class of 1959 meets
STEUBENVILLE -- Members of the Steubenville High School Class of 1959 held their monthly luncheon July 8 with 16 in attendance.
The group welcomed George and Patty Milosevich back. Sympathy was extended to JoAnne Monigold on the loss of her son, with wishes for a return to better health for her in future.
Norina Eroshevich provided the blessing and the birthday cake. Happy birthday was sung to her and everyone who would celebrate a July birthday.
The next luncheon will take place at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Scaffidi’s Restaurant and Tavern. Call Eroshevich at (740) 219-2234 for reservations. All are welcome.
Aerobics class to be offered at WVNCC
WEIRTON -- The Weirton campus of West Virginia Northern Community College will once again be offering an aerobics class Aug. 25 through Dec. 11.
The class will meet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the student center, located in the back of the building.
The class is low-impact, with an emphasis on increasing aerobic endurance, strength and flexibility. There is no floor work, so students stand and move for the entire hour. Everyone is encouraged to work at his or her own ability level, with the instructor showing easier and more difficult ways to move to the music.
Stretchy bands are provided for the strength section, but participants can bring their own if they prefer. The best clothing is loose or stretchy and everyone needs a bottle of water.

Toronto Senior Citizens meet
TORONTO -- President John Livingstone called the July 16 meeting of the Toronto Senior Citizens to order at the Karaffa Recreation Center.
Arlene Obertance led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the blessing for the meal. She read “Pray for America” to commemorate the 250 Anniversary. The kitchen committee was thanked.
Patty Smith gave the treasurers report, which was approved by Mary Alice Meyer and Linda Livingstone. Peggy Miller gave report on the events from the meeting.

Arlene Obertance read July jokes and puns. Discussion included parking for the trip to Vermont and future day trip. The 50/50 was won by Deanne Starr, and the big basket was won by Okey Nestor.
Door prizes were won by Peggy Miller, Emma Deptula, Gene Viola, Lynette Pearce, Karen Thornton, Marilyn Tarr, Fay Jones, George Uselton, Patty Smith and Danise Englund.

STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Chapter of the Public Employees Retirement Initiative will meet at 11 a.m. Aug. 12 at Scaffidi’s Restaurant and Tavern.
Writer plans workshop
STEUBENVILLE -- An award-winning writer who was born in Steubenville will hold a workshop last this month.
Debra Fleming, who grew up in Bloomingdale, will present Poetry in Season at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 at Zion United Church of Christ, 139 N. Fifth St.
Fleming is the author of three collections of poems, “Morning, Winter Solstice” (Vineyard, 2012), “Into a New Country” (Cherry Grove, 2016); and “Earthrise” (White Violet Press, 2021); two chapbooks by Finishing Line Press, “Migrations” (2005) and “Source of the River” (2018); and one novel, “Without Leave” (Black Mountain Press, 2014), winner of the Asheville Award.
A winner of a Vandewater Poetry Award and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and National Council of Learned Societies, she has had three poems nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She served for many years as director and editor of the Ashland Poetry Press. An equestrian and mountain climber, she lives on a farm in northeast Ohio with her husband, Clarke W. Owens, who also is a writer.

Fleming will be reading the day’s Psalm in worship, which begins at 10 a.m..
The cost of the workshop is $10, but anyone attending the full worship service will be able to attend the workshop at no cost.
