Event set to celebrate World’s Largest Teapot

CHESTER -- For more than a decade, the Chester community has rallied around its famous roadside landmark, and this Saturday, residents and visitors will once again gather to celebrate the World’s Largest Teapot.
Teapot Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and will feature vendors, crafters, artisans and other activities surrounding the landmark.
"Come out and join us as we celebrate our teapot and raise funds for its upkeep," event coordinator Tara Beiswenger said.
The event also will feature the annual sale of a commemorative Fiesta ornament depicting the World’s Largest Teapot. The ornament will be available for $18 and will feature a linen color design this year.
Ornaments also are available at Citizens Drug Store in Chester and Chester City Hall. Teapot T-shirts also will be available for purchase.
Teapot Day was started by Susan Hineman as a fundraiser to help maintain the landmark. Beiswenger took over coordinating the event last year.
William Devon built the Teapot in 1938 from a large wooden hogshead Hires' Root Beer barrel he purchased in Pennsylvania. After bringing it to Chester, he used it as a concession stand selling food and souvenirs near his pottery store on Carolina Avenue.
The Teapot changed ownership twice after World War II before being purchased by C&P Telephone company and donated to the city of Chester in the late 1980s.
The city moved the Teapot to its current location and completed repairs before officially dedicating it in October 1990.
Teapot Day was later created as a fundraising effort after years of weather and normal wear took a toll on the landmark.
