WEIRTON -- The City of Weirton is seeking its next group of youthful advisers.
Applications currently are being accepted for those interested in taking part in the 2026-2027 term of the Weirton Youth Council.
"The last day to apply is Sept. 14," explained Ward 5 Councilwoman Brittany Holloway during Tuesday’s meeting of Weirton Council.
Holloway serves as one of the advisers for the program, which was started as a pilot program in 2025 and renewed in the spring.
According to the application packet, the Weirton Youth Council "provides young people with a direct means of communication with the Mayor and City Council while giving students an opportunity to learn about City government, policies, procedures, and municipal operations. The WYC serves in an advisory capacity, providing youth perspectives, concerns, and ideas to City leaders on matters affecting young people and the community."
Youth who live in the city and are in the seventh, eighth or ninth grades, whether in public, private or home school, are eligible to apply. They also must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average and attend at least four designated regular meetings of Weirton Council during their program year.
Youth Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month, with additional meetings, activities, community service projects and volunteer opportunities set throughout the year.
Organizers are still looking for those considering being a part of the program, with a maximum of 12 youth accepted.
"We have a few," Holloway said.
Applications are available on the City of Weirton’s website and must be submitted by the deadline either via email to youthcouncil@cityofweirton.com or through the U.S. Postal Service to Weirton City Building, Attn: City Manager/Mayor’s Office, 200 Municipal Plaza, Weirton, WV 26062.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, with those selected notified by Sept. 18.
The first meeting of the Weirton Youth Council will be held Sept. 28.
A graduation event will be held in early June for those who complete the program.
