FOLLANSBEE – A West Virginia State Police official said the man shot and killed by police Friday night verbally threatened them while bearing a knife.
First Sgt. Dave Robinson of the State Police’s Ohio County detachment said officers involved in the shooting death of 53-year-old Clifton Reintzel said he also approached the officers with the knife at the door to his home in the 600 block of Main Street.
Robinson said the officers reported hearing a woman inside the house scream after receiving a report of a domestic incident there.
He said the woman, who was Reintzel’s wife, sustained minor injuries from Reintzel but wasn’t cut by him. He confirmed Reintzel had cut himself with the knife.
Robinson didn’t release the name of the officer who shot Reintzel. He said officers from Follansbee Police, West Virginia State Police and the Brooke County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the scene.
He said all of the officers involved expressed sadness over the shooting.
He said the investigation of the incident is ongoing and will include an autopsy of Reintzel’s body.
Robinson said it could be weeks before a report is completed.
Brooke County Prosecutor Joseph Barki III said he will review the report to determine if the officers’ actions were appropriate in light of the circumstances.
