Traditional advent service of lessons and carols set at Franciscan University

STEUBENVILLE -- The Schola Cantorum Franciscana and the Franciscan University Chorale will celebrate the birth of Christ with the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.

The annual Advent event will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Christ the King Chapel at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols was developed in late 19th century England as a prelude to the Christmas Mass at night and tells the story of the Incarnation from the fall of Adam to the birth of Christ through Scripture, prayer and music.

The Schola and Chorale, directed by the Rev. Stephen Concordia, OSB, and professor George Melhorn, will perform traditional carols and musical pieces, including those by Bach, Handel and Poston.

The Schola's new CD, "Exultate Deo," can be purchased at the service, which is free and open to the public.
