WEIRTON -- Weirton Council is set to discuss the purchase of two police cruisers, equipment for the city's Public Works Department and an adjustment to the municipal salary ordinance.
The proposed pieces of legislation were recommended Thursday by the city's Finance Committee, and will be presented to the full council for a vote during its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.
Among Thursday's recommendations was the purchase of a Volvo vibratory asphalt roller, at a cost of $53,700, to be used by the Street Department at Public Works.
"I'm assuming, at this price, it's a big roller," Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh said.
Public Works Director Rod Rosnick noted the roller would be 4 inches wider than what the city has currently, as well as weigh 800 pounds more. The city already has a trailer to carry the equipment.
"We're going to be auctioning off the other one," Rosnick said, noting it has been operated by the city for 19 years.
The purchase had been budgeted at $55,000, according to Rosnick, and the equipment will be available in the spring.
The purchase of two cruisers for the police department -- one Ford SUV at $36,462 and one Ford sedan at $32,698 -- also was recommended.
"We rotate cars every four years," Police Chief Rob Alexander explained, after being questioned on the status of the department's fleet. "If we do two every year, we'll be OK."
Marsh and Ward 6 Councilman Enzo Fracasso said, with the purchase of the cars, they expect to see a request for equipment, including light bars, in the future.
Alexander said there would be requests, possibly in February, but some equipment could be transferred from existing vehicles to the new purchases.
"A lot of that we save on," Alexander said.
Finance Director Diana Smoljanovich noted the only change to Ordinance 1313, as part of discussed salary adjustments, would be to increase the city clerk's pay by $5,000. This had been brought up during council's December meeting, and now will be presented for a vote.
