Brooke County commissioners want help naming bridge

By TARYN LINDER 3 min read

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County commissioners, on Tuesday, invited area residents to assist in naming the new Ohio River bridge that will connect an area just south of Wellsburg with Brilliant.

Commissioner Tim Ennis said he plans to work with the West Virginia Division of Highways to create a voting system.

"I think it would be great if we have the people of Brooke County involved in the process of naming the bridge," said Ennis.

After approximately 18 years of planning, a ceremonial groundbreaking for the bridge project was held in July. The 830-foot, tied-arch span bridge is being constructed by the Flatiron Corp. of Broomfield, Colo. Designs have called for a four-lane bridge deck, with one lane traveling east and one going west, with a center turning lane and a lane for bicyclists.

Plans call for it to be completed sometime in 2021.

In other business, commissioners announced available positions within the county, including three seats on the Brooke County Museum Board.

Ruby Greathouse is the museum's volunteer curator and member of the board.

"I'd like those interested to come visit the museum and see what the heck we do," said Greathouse.

There are also two seats vacant on the 911 Advisory Board.

In addition, the board noted at the commission meeting held Feb. 19 that they will be going through the steps to find a fiduciary commissioner outside the county, since they have not received interest from Brooke County residents in the position.

Commissioner A.J. Thomas was the county's fiduciary commissioner, along with Wayne R. Mielke, before he was elected to the commission.

The board also hosted Joy Reese of C.H.A.N.G.E., Inc. in order to introduce the programs available with the organization.

C.H.A.N.G.E. is a community action and health agency that serves northern West Virginia (Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, and Marshall Counties) and Jefferson County, Ohio providing various services to those in need, according to the organization's website.

Reese noted homebuyer education and budget management as just two educational resources provided by C.H.A.N.G.E.

"I do think this is a great program," said Commissioner Stacy Wise. "The classes are great tools."

In addition to housing and income management programs, C.H.A.N.G.E. also offers community resources in health services, transportation, emergency services and meal programs
