WELLSBURG -- Students and alumni of Brooke High School put their art on display at the Brooke County Historical Museum and Culture Center during the fifth-annual BHS Student and Alumni Art Show.
Categories for awards included student submissions, alumni submissions and people's choice.
Wheeling artists Mindi Yarbrough Langford and Cfe Jimenez served as judges for the first two categories, while visitors chose the winner of the people's choice award.
Art Teacher Sara Roark, who helps in organizing the show, said it is important for small towns to provide an artistic outlet.
"Often in small towns, either art is not showcased or there is not enough art to show," said Roark. "It is important to have a place to showcase local art, as well as to see other's work."
Roark said the display had a wide selection of pieces.
This year, more than 85 pieces of art were submitted.
"There is a pretty interesting selection, which shows a variety of our students," noted Roark. "They (the students) put their heart and soul into all their work."
While Brooke High School faculty were welcomed to submit their own artwork, Roark said there were no faculty submissions this year. There were, however, submissions from alumni.
"We added the alumni portion to the event to provide communication and a connection among Brooke High School classes," said Roark.
Ruby Greathouse, member of the museum's executive board, is proud to partner with the community.
"We are very pleased and impressed with the art that these young people submit," said Greathouse. "It's a great credit to Brooke County."
