WELLSBURG -- Eleven teams are preparing to use the force to find a cure for cancer Saturday at Brooke Hills Park, as part of the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
The theme for the Relay is "May the 4th be with you," a nod to the "Star Wars" movie franchise. The relay will be held 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Pennies from Heaven is just one of the local teams participating in the Relay for Life event. Founded in the mid-1990's, Pennies from Heaven has raised substantial funds over the years for cancer research, education and patient services supported by the American Cancer Society.
Starting at 3:30 p.m. today, people can register to participate in the Relay at relayforlife.org, or in person at the event. Registration is free.
"Registration happens all through the event time," said event co-leader Steve Lauck. "We like to catch as many names as possible."
Lauck said the team's goal this year is to raise $26,000.
"The purpose is to raise cancer awareness and also raise money to fight the disease," said Lauck. "Our motto is 'Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.'"
In addition to being involved with Saturday's Relay event, Pennies from Heaven held a wine and craft beer tasting, while fellow team Hearts and Soles held a bingo night.
"In my experience and meeting hundreds of people over the years, I think people participate to show their support for those battling cancer and remember those who unfortunately lost their fight," said Lauck.
Lauck has been involved with Relay as a participant for the past 22 years; however, he has been an active member of the committee for the past nine years.
Lauck said his favorite part of the Relay is the luminaria ceremony.
Luminaria are bags with names written on them of those who have fought or are currently fighting the battle against cancer. Many participants decorate them using markers, photos or other memorabilia to make the luminaria unique and special. Some people cut stars, circles, or other shapes out of the bag to enhance their glow when lit.
The relay will begin with an opening ceremony followed by the Survivor lap. A free dinner will be provided to the survivors immediately after their lap.
In honor of "Star Wars," the evening will end with popcorn and a viewing of "Star Wars: Clone Wars the animated series."
