Two Hancock County voting precincts to be combined

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Commission, during its April 25 meeting, agreed to combine two of the county’s voting precincts.

Commissioners voted unanimously to combine Precinct 17 and Precinct 18 prior to the 2020 presidential election.

County Clerk George Foley had requested the change.

“We have two precincts voting in the same location,” Foley explained.

According to the county website, Precincts 17 and 18 have both been voting at the Marland Heights Community Church, 3900 Brightway in Weirton. Both precincts have been a part of the county’s Clay District. According to information provided to the commission by Foley, Precinct 17 has 694 registered voters assigned to it, with 639 at Precinct 18.

Under state code, a precinct can have no more than 1,500 registered voters.

“It’s below the maximum,” Foley said.

Commission President Joe Barnabei asked if a decision had been made on what the consolidated precinct would be called, but noted there is more than a year before the 2020 primary election to make such a decision and notify affected residents.

“We have plenty of time for the May election,” Barnabei said.
