Preparations under way for Peach Festival

WEIRTON -- Members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church are inviting area residents to have a peach of a time as part of an annual festival and fundraiser.
“This is our 56th-annual Peach Festival,” spokesperson Wendy Speer noted.
This year’s event will be held 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Aug. 10 at the church located at St. Thomas Drive.
A group of volunteers gathered for two days last week to assist in the preparations for the festival, peeling peaches to be used in what has become a signature item for patrons.
“We have our giant peach shortcake,” Speer said.
Typically, more than 1,000 pounds of peaches are peeled each year to make the dessert.
In addition, the festival’s menu will include roast beef, barbecue pulled pork and meatball sandwiches, haluski, french fries and beverages.
Organizers also are making plans for a bakery featuring a variety of desserts for purchase.
In addition, there will be a book sale, a hot dog stand, crafters and vendors offering a variety of items for purchase.
Other attractions are in the works, according to Speer.
St. Thomas’ Peach Festival can trace its history back to the church’s former building downtown, where festivities were held in a neighboring lot, and included carnival games, pony rides and contests. The current church building was constructed in 1969.
