City is looking for a signal

Left-turn arrow sought for busy intersection

WEIRTON — Weirton officials are looking into the possibility of having a new left-turn signal installed at one of the city’s major intersections.

During the Aug. 15 meeting of the city’s Traffic Commission, it was announced a memo was being sent from the commission to City Manager Carlo Pilgrim proposing the city lobby the West Virginia Division of Highways to install a left-turn signal in the southbound lane of Main Street at its intersection with Cove Road.

“Numerous citizens have contacted the Traffic Commission with concerns of safety and traffic flow turning left in the southbound lane of the intersection of Main Street and Cove Road,” the memo states. “We have reviewed the issue, and agree with the concerns of travel flow and safety in that area.”

Traffic Commission members had first publicly discussed the issue during their June meeting, asking City Clerk DeeAnn Pulliam to contact DOH District Traffic Engineer Paul Hicks to review proper procedure.

According to Pulliam, Hicks had recommeneded a formal request from the city manager.

“We feel the implementation of the turn signal will ensure safer and smoother traffic flow in that intersection and ask that you submit a formal request to Mr. Hicks requesting the turn signal,” the commission’s memo reads.

In other business, the Traffic Commission revisited a recommendation to place two stop signs in the area of the Beaumont Drive and Palisades Drive intersection, at the request of resident Marcie Dean, who lives at 1272 Elmhurst Drive.

Dean explained the placement of the signs creates an obstacle for moving vehicles on and off of her property, saying she was willing to work with the commission on a solution.

“I think we can come up with something,” Dean said.

Commission Chair Romie Castelli said he felt the sign on Beaumont could remain, and they could study the issue further.

Two other issues to go before the commission — a request for a no parking area across from the driveway of 113 Maryland Ave. and a review of the no parking area at 3360 West St. — were tabled while the commission gathers additional information.
