WELLSBURG -- Wellsburg will be celebrating 41 years of "all things apple" at the city's annual Applefest Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. on Friday when Amanda DiMarzio's kindergarten class from Brooke Primary South takes the stage to sing for visitors.
Organizers said this year's event will really focus on youth as they are the "future of our Apple Festival." From 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Town Square will be host to a children's market. Area children 15 years old and younger will be given free booths where they can sell everything from lemonade to used toys. Adults are permitted to help the children set up the booths from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. that morning, but then it's children only.
"This will be a learning experience for our children," the organizers explained. "(They will learn) social skills, pricing, negotiating, handling of money and making change."
Local non-profit groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H are expected to take part.

Also on Saturday, the Applefest will be hosting its annual Pet Show beginning at 11 a.m. below the log cabin on 6th Street and Charles Street.
All pets are welcome to try for one of 18 trophies. Organizers are expecting everything from cats and dogs to snakes, hamsters, ponies and goats to be represented in the event.
Sunday will see more traditional events with the "All Things Apple" contest sponsored by Mullenbach Funeral Home. There will be contests for the best apple pie, apple butter and other apple foods. A special children's competition will be open to cooks aged 9 to 16.
Registration begins at 1 p.m. in the Town Square and judging will start at 2 p.m.
