WEIRTON -- The Ohio Valley Cloak & Dagger Company will present two Halloween-themed productions of Cloak and Dagger On the Air Saturday.
The first production, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," will be at 1 p.m. at the Main Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, located at 407 SS. Fourth St. in Steubenville. Local actors Ralph Parissi, Micah Labishak-Underwood and Justin Swoyer will lead a full cast in an adaptation of the classic Washington Irving short story, with the Holy Foley Molies providing live sound effects and classical pianist Roberta Fedoush performing a classical score alongside the story.
"When we performed our production of the Sherlock Holmes tale, 'A Scandal in Bohemia,' at the library in May, the response was overwhelming," said Pete Fernbaugh, artistic director for Cloak & Dagger. "Jenn Cesta asked us to return for Halloween with a brand-new adaptation of 'Sleepy Hollow.' I'm excited to bring our troupe back to the library and excited to present this witty, yet creepy story to the public. We're trying to be as close to the original tale as we can, and I think folks will get a good sense of Irving's delightful observations about early American culture and the New England superstitions of the time."
This production is free and open to the public. No reservations are required, but seating is first-come, first-served.
The second production, "Nevermore," will be at 7 p.m. at the Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center's Halloween at the Museum event. Sponsored by Joyia Lytle Allstate Insurance, Cloak & Dagger On the Air will present adaptations of popular stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe, including "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Pit and the Pendulum."
"The cool thing here is, Joyia has agreed to not only sponsor our show, but to appear in a commercial skit for her business," Fernbaugh said. "This skit is a parody of Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart,' so we never stray too far from our theme for the evening. We're also excited to be returning to the museum, where we performed three times last season. I love what Dennis Jones is doing, and we're honored to be part of this event."
Fernbaugh added that he hopes local teachers, professors and students will take advantage of these opportunities to see classic American literature come to life.
"Sometimes these stories just don't pack as much of a punch when you're reading them as opposed to when you're watching them performed. There's so much life in those centuries-old words, and a great deal for students of all ages to discover. I guess you could say our event is not just entertaining, but a bit educational as well, but educational in the most entertaining way possible."
Admission for the museum performance is $7 for general audience members and $5 for seniors, students and military members. No reservations are needed.
