Local drug takeback locations are announced

By From staff reports 1 min read

Residents who want to get rid of unused prescription drugs in the home will have a chance to do so at various locations from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs, said Nicole Balakos, Jefferson County health commissioner. Balakos notes that, for the first time, the Drug Enforcement Administration will also accept vaping devices and cartridges at any of its drop-off locations.

"Many instances of drug abuse begin with the misuse of prescription medications from the home," she said. "It is all too frequent that medications are skimmed from the homes and what may begin as recreational use turns to addiction."

Balakos stressed the importance of ridding the home of unneeded prescription medication, and reminding families to maintain a watchful eye on prescriptions kept in the home.

Balakos said drug take backs will be held at Value Leader Pharmacy, 200 Luray Drive, Wintersville; Steubenville Wal-Mart; Steubenville Kroger; Weirton and Follansbee police departments; and the sheriff's departments in Brooke and Hancock counties.
