WEIRTON -- With trick-or-treating set in many local communities tonight, Weirton officials are encouraging residents to take precautions in order to remain safe during Halloween festivities.
Residents wishing to welcome trick-or-treaters are advised to turn on their porch lights.
Youth also are advised to remain in their own neighborhoods, and visit only those homes with which they are familiar.
The Weirton Police Department will have increased patrols in residential neighborhoods throughout the evening, and is requesting motorists use extra caution while driving through those areas.
Police Chief Rob Alexander explained children often are excited by the celebrations of Halloween, and may run into the street. He asked drivers to be mindful of their speed and to pay attention to their surroundings.
"Our children are way more important than your driver's license," Alexander said. "Slow down."
Trick-or-treaters are reminded not to accept treats from strangers, to walk in groups or with parents, use sidewalks, when available, and cross the streets only at intersections.
Any treats that appear to have been tampered with should be set aside immediately, and brought to the attention of the Weirton Police Department.
In addition, the Hancock and Brooke county sheriff's departments will be making their X-ray machines available to scan treats Thursday evening.
Parents are encouraged to accompany their children, and either sew or fasten a reflective material to their children's costumes.
