PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates CARE-a-van will be making a stop in Weirton as players and coaches visit communities throughout the Tri-State Area.
The three-day tour, set Wednesday through Friday, leads up to PiratesFest at PNC Park.
The CARE-a-van will stop at Weirton Elementary, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday for an event in partnership with the Weirton Baseball Association. As part of the event, which will be closed to the public, Pirates representatives will offer a baseball skills clinic to pupils in first through fourth grades.
Youth will rotate through stations operated by Pirates players and coaches, as well as Weirton Baseball Association coaches and the Bucco Brigade, and participate in a question and answer session.
Those currently scheduled to appear are players Josh Bell, Sam Howard and Clay Holmes, as well as manager Derek Shelton and coach Tarrick Brock.
Other local stops that day include visits with the McDonald Volunteer Fire Department in McDonald, Pa., to deliver doughnuts and coffee for the community’s firefighters; the YMCA of Wheeling for a Miracle League of the Ohio Valley fantasy camp and a baseball clinic with youth from Laughlin Memorial Chapel.
The CARE-a-van features four separate groups of players and coaches traveling to public and private community action events throughout the region. Pirates players, coaches, front office personnel and Pirates Charities partner with local non-profits and donate their time to assist with projects and outreach, as well as visit with schools and community organizations.
