STEUBENVILLE -- A section of University Boulevard between Woodlawn Road and Wellesley Avenue will be closed to all traffic Thursday and Friday while crews connect two 20-inch water lines.
"It's not very large, but it is a crucial area," City Manager Jim Mavromatis said. "It's a main artery coming into town."
The work itself is expected to have a minimal impact on water customers: Mavromatis said crews will be making a "hot connection, so there shouldn't be any water loss." He said they don't anticipate discoloration, but if residents experience problems, as always they should contact the water department.
"We don't expect to see any, but it is possible," he said.
Motorists will be able to get from Brady Circle to Belleview Park without a problem, he said. "But you won't be able to go east of Woodlawn or west of Capri's," he said.
"We need to connect two lines there that have slipped apart over the years," Mavromatis said. "We have to hook them up again. We've put it off for several years, but it needs to be done because of everything going on in this area."
There's been considerable growth in the area, including development of Franciscan Square and expansion projects at TEAM Automotive and Franciscan University of Steubenville.
That area's also been plagued with water line issues.
"It's going to impact drivers," Mavromatis said. "But the good part is school is out this week. And a lot of people are still off for the holidays."
He said Washington Street would be a good alternative for motorists headed to Weirton or state Route 7.
