Code change would allow indoor gun range to open in Weirton
WEIRTON — Weirton Council, during its meeting Monday, began the process of amending the city’s firearms and hunting regulations, with officials saying the move would assist in the opening of a proposed business in the city.
Council voted 5-0 in favor of an ordinance to amend Ordinance 858, codified as subsection 553.03 of the city’s code of ordinances, focusing on the discharging of firearms and hunting.
“This is being driven by an entity that wants to open an indoor firearms range in the city,” Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh explained.
Marsh and Ward 6 Councilman Enzo Fracasso sponsored the ordinance.
The use of firearms in other areas of the city still would not be permitted as a result of the amendment, Marsh noted.
“This does not change discharging outside of this range,” Marsh said.
In addition to Marsh and Fracasso, those voting in favor of the ordinance were Ward 2 Councilman Michael Adams, Ward 5 Councilwoman Flora Perrone and Ward 7 Councilman Terry Weigel.
Ward 1 Councilman Tim Connell and Ward 4 Councilman George Ash were not in attendance.
The ordinance must be passed by a second reading in order to go into effect.
Marsh also explained he has been meeting with City Attorney Vince Gurrera about other changes to the ordinance, in an effort to bring it up to date.
“This code goes back to 1956,” Marsh said.
Those potential changes would be presented to council for consideration at a later time.
