COVID-19: The Latest

An open letter to our readers

To our readers:

While our lives can often be unpredictable, it’s rare that we have to face the uncertainty and constantly changing series of events that have come with COVID-19.

There’s real reason for concern -- the coronavirus is very contagious, and that has led to a situation where all area residents have been asked to avoid contact with others as much as possible. Schools have been closed, restaurants are limited to carry-out options only and an ever increasing number of people are being required to work from the their homes.

And, while more and more businesses are temporarily closing, we want you to know that the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times will continue to offer the most extensive coverage of news and the best platform for advertising available in the Tri-State Area. To help us serve you even better while maintaining the health and safety of members of our staff, we are modifying some of procedures for reaching us. Here’s a rundown of those changes:

General

Our building will remain open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The address is 401 Herald Square, Steubenville, Ohio, 43952. You can still make payments, place classified and display advertising and drop off news items during those hours. The general telephone number is (740) 283-4711.

News

Our reporters will continue to be in the field every day, working to provide you with the most up-to-date information and showing how your friends and neighbors are adapting.

You still will be able to contact our editorial department by calling (740) 283-4711, or by e-mail at newsroom@heraldstaronline.com or chowell@weirtondailytimes.com. It’s the easiest way to submit a news item or photograph.

Items also can be submitted by clicking the Virtual Newsroom button on either of our websites, and faxes can be sent to (740) 284-7355.

You’re also welcome to drop your items off at our office at 401 Herald Square in Steubenville between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you regularly have been delivering items in person, you will notice a change in how they are processed. We’ve eliminated public access to the newsroom -- you’ll have to leave your information at the front desk.

If you don’t want to enter the building or are submitting an item after business hours or on weekends, you will find a mail slot on the frame of the main doors.

And, if none of these options works, you can turn to good, old-fashioned mail.

No matter which method you use to submit an item, make sure your contact information is included: Name, address, telephone number and e-mail.

Advertising

If you already have an advertising representative, you can contact her directly through e-mail or by telephone. If you are looking to place a new display advertisement, you can contact Denise Delatore by telephone or by e-mail at ddelatore@heraldstaronline.com

If you are looking to place a classified advertisement, you can contact Cindy Steineman in person, by telephone, by e-mail at csteineman@heraldstaronline.com or by mail.

During the next few weeks, you can expect to see on our pages information offering details about special advertisements we make available, such as in memoriums. You’ll find information about size, price and artwork that might be available. Included will be everything you need to know to make your purchase without having to make a trip to our office.

You will be contacted and provided with information about the cost for your advertisement and given payment options.

Circulation

Calls about delivery questions or concerns can still be made to (740) 283-4711. You can still make your payment in person at the newspaper office by cash, check or credit card; through the mail; or by credit card by clicking the “Subscribe” button under “Contact Information” on either of our websites. Just note that you are making a payment so you do not have a second subscription started under your name.

We know that accurate, trusted and reliable information remains one of our greatest assets -- and it becomes even more critical during times like those in which we now find ourselves. Providing that is nothing new to us -- employees of the Herald-Star have been doing it since June 6, 1806, and employees of the Daily Times since June 21, 1928. It’s an expectation we always have worked hard to meet -- and one we will continue to strive to achieve for years to come.
