Blue Stream Farms holds open house

WEIRTON -- Blue Stream Farms welcomed the community, Saturday, to see some of the organization's work for themselves, holding an open house at its facility in the lower level of Sacred Heart of Mary Church.
Blue Stream Farms is an educational non-profit organization, working with area schools to operate an aquaponics lab.
Since its founding in 2015, Blue Stream Farms has focused on a platform of education, health and environment, developing a project-based learning method utilizing aquaponics -- a system of aquaculture in which the waste of farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically.
The program features experimental learning, with students participating in hands-on educational activities.
Guests at Saturday's open house learned more about the history of Blue Stream Farms, as well as future plans, presented by Daniel B. Spickard, chief executive officer; Joseph r. Edmiston, chief operating officer; and Doug Velegol, founder and executive director.
Guided tours also were offered.
The open house also featured food, prepared by Michelle Bragg from The Zesty Italian, including greens and microgreens grown at Blue Stream Farms.
