By CRAIG HOWELL 2 min read

WEIRTON -- Area residents are being asked to “hop to it” while helping out a local food pantry and the people it serves.

The Community Bread Basket is in the process of organizing its inaugural Bunny Hop 5K, to be held April 4 at Marland Heights Park.

Registration is under way for the race, with pre-registration until March 23 by either calling (304) 748-7595 or going online to www.secondsoleracing.com.

Race day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Marland Heights Park, with the race kicking off at 10 a.m.

Event chair Jeanie Montgomery, who is secretary and treasurer of the Community Bread Basket board, said the new event has been receiving support from the community, with many businesses and residents serving as sponsors.

“People have been really generous so far,” she said.

Break Basket bord member Jim Pauchnik explained awards will be distributed by gender and age group, with the 5K divided into six categories: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 plus.

“We’re going to do top three and overall,” Pauchnik said.

The event also will feature a Bunny Hop Toddler Run for those 5 years of age and under.

Montgomery explained every child entering the Toddler Run will receive an Easter egg coloring kit, with the winner being awarded an Easter basket.

The cost to participate is $10 for the Toddler Run and $25 for the 5K run and walk.

The route for the race will begin at Marland Heights Park, following Riverview to a loop and a right to Elwood, back onto Riverview, left onto Rothrock, right onto Collins Way, then onto Hanlin and Palisades, left onto Legion Drive, right onto Overlook, left to Brightway then back to Riverview and ending at Marland Heights Park.
