WEIRTON -- The Mary H. Weir Public Library has joined other municipal facilities in closing to the public as a precaution against the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, officials announced the library board held a special meeting Saturday, deciding to close the library to the public, with all meetings and programs suspended until further notice.

Library staff will be available to maintain library network operations and to assist with access to online virtual library services. Assistance to the public will be maintained by telephone or electronically, with patrons asked to either call the library at (304) 797-8510 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or email refdesk@weirton.lib.wv.us.

Patrons will be able to return borrowed materials by using the book drop located by the Sarah's Lane entrance to the library, near the Millsop Community Center.

Income tax forms will be available for public access in the library's front electric door vestibule, facing Main Street. However, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to assist residents with filing their tax returns has been suspended.

The library also will not be accepting donations of physical materials, such as books, CDs, DVDs and archival materials, during this time. Library officials ask those wishing to make a donation to wait until the library reopens to the public.

The library's children's specialist will be available through telephone and email, but the adult literacy program has been suspended until further notice.

Updates will be available through the library's blog at mhwpl.blogspot.com, and its Facebook page.

Weirton officials, on Friday, announced the Municipal Building also would be closed to the public, with procedures for the payment of bills, fees and fines through either the U.S. Postal Service, online or the use of the dropbox located at the Municipal Building.

The Millsop Community Center also was closed to the public Friday, with the postponement of all league activities and programs.
