WHEELING -- WVU Medicine and the Ogden Newspapers will be providing area residents a chance to kick off the summer in a healthy way during the inaugural WVU Medicine/Wheeling Hospital Health Expo over Memorial Day Weekend.

The Health Expo, part of the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine, is set for the atrium of WesBanco Arena from 7 a.m. until noon May 23, and 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. May 24.

The Health Expo will feature medical professionals from WVU Medicine and Wheeling Hospital, who will be on hand to discuss issues from pediatric care, men's and women's health, sports injuries and more -- all in the name of a healthy Ohio Valley.

"We're excited to work with Wheeling Hospital to be part of this event and look forward to connecting with people in Wheeling to ensure their health care needs are met," Dr. Judie Charlton, WVU Medicine's chief medical officer, said.

Perry Nardo, general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, commended WVU Medicine and Wheeling Hospital not only for their commitment to providing high-quality health care in West Virginia, but also for putting their medical professionals in front of local residents at the Health Expo to assist with their personal health care needs.

"We are very pleased that WVU Medicine has come on as the title sponsor for the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend," Nardo said. "The Wellness Weekend is all about fun, family, and fitness, and having two outstanding organizations dedicated to the region's health like WVU Medicine and Wheeling Hospital will only help the Ohio Valley kick off a happy and healthy summer."

Douglass Harrison, CEO of Wheeling Hospital, said, "We are pleased to partner with WVU Medicine to help sponsor this event. At Wheeling Hospital, we are in the business of health care and making sure our community remains healthy.

"This expo is a showcase of healthy living and what we can do as a community to improve upon that."

The WVU Medicine/Wheeling Hospital Health Expo is one of a number of events that make up the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend: on May 23, the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic will celebrate its 44th running. Saturday also features the 5K Run and Walk for Health, followed by the Ogden Tiny Tot Trot sponsored by OV Parent.

This year, there is a new start time for the 5K Run (8:10 a.m. May 23) and the addition of an awards ceremony for both the 5K and the half marathon. The 5K awards will be presented at 11 a.m. May 23, with the Half Marathon awards at 12:30 p.m. There also is a recovery party on the waterfront Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Events on May 24, kick off with the Ohio Valley Trail Partner's 14th annual Heritage Trail Bicycle Tour, with the first pedal at 8 a.m. That's followed by the Tough as Nails Urban Challenge sponsored by The Health Plan at noon. Sunday's recovery party is set from 1-6 p.m. at the waterfront.
