Gov. Justice names Amjad as new state health officer to replace Slemp
CHARLESTON — Dr. Ayne Amjad, a Beckley-based physician, will replace Dr. Cathy Slemp as the state health officer and commissioner of the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health.
Gov. Jim Justice announced the appointment of Amjad Friday during his coronavirus briefing at the Capitol.
Amjad, a native of Raleigh County and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, is an internal medicine specialist. She operates two practices in Beckley and Princeton and has practiced medicine in southern West Virginia for a decade.
Slemp, who was the state health officer since 2018, submitted a letter of resignation to Justice in June after the governor expressed displeasure with her office’s handling of COVID-19 data over discrepancies in the number of active cases.
