Madonna High School graduates the Class of 2020

WEIRTON — Madonna High School has listed is 2020 graduates.

They include:

¯ Kelsey Ann Crawford, the daughter of Michael and Karen Crawford. She graduated first in the Class of 2020 with a 4.42 grade-point average and is on the distinguished honor roll.

Crawford served as class president all four years and was a member of Interact Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions Club, Pep Club, Science Club, Geek Club and the National Honor Society. She participated in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference, Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership, the National Student Leadership Conference of Medicine and the Magee-Womens Research Institute High School Summer Internship Program, and was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar. Crawford is a four-year letter winner in cheerleading, a two-year letter winner in tennis and a one-year letter winner in track and soccer. Her cheer team is three-time Class A OVAC cheerleading champion and a 2019 regional champion. Crawford was named to the OVAC All-Star cheering team for 2020. In track, she was a 2019 runner-up in 300-meter hurdles at regionals and placed eighth at states. Her 4x100m team placed fifth at states. In soccer, her team was runner-up at the 2019 OVAC championship. Crawford was a USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic gymnast and holds two Pennsylvania state all-around titles along with a Pennsylvania state uneven bars title. She is an active member at St. Joseph the Worker parish, where she teaches children’s liturgy, is an altar server and school choir member.

Crawford is a volunteer at the Weirton Geriatric Center, the Salvation Army and Relay for Life. She was awarded the Michael J. Smoljanovich Memorial Scholarship, the WV Promise Scholarship, the Larsen Educational Trust Scholarship, the Teddi and Justin Licker Memorial Scholarship, the Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley Howard Corcoran Memorial Scholarship, the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Festival Scholarship and the Louis F. Serra Family Scholarship. She plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and major in biological sciences to pursue a career in medicine. She has been invited to attend camp with the Notre Dame cheerleading team.

¯ Lexus Jade Melnyk is the valedictorian and vice president of the Class of 2020. Lexus is the daughter of Pete and Aqua Melnyk. She is a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church, the National Honor Society and Student Council.

Melnyk was president of the Pro-Life Club and vice president of SADD. She is a four year letterman of the cheer squad where she is a three-time OVAC champion, regional champion and two-time state qualifier. She received awards including Ambassador Leadership, Medical Scientist Award of Excellence, OVAC All-Conference Academic Award, National Student Leadership Conference and Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence. She was a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador and a Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership group member. Her volunteer work included the Thanksgiving dinner at the Weirton Senior Center and leading at the St. Joseph the Worker Vacation Bible School. She collected food for food drives, volunteered at assisted living facilities and participated in community clean-ups.

Her hobbies include dancing, fishing, listening to music, spending time with friends and family and watching Disney movies. She plans to pursue a degree in biochemistry at Franciscan University of Steubenville and continue to medical school. She as awarded scholarships including WV Promise Scholarship, Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship, Madonna Class of 1964 John Colesante Memorial Scholarship, Cecilia Serra Scholarship, Michael Smoljanovich Memorial Scholarship, Tony Ruszkowski/Never Alone Memorial Scholarship, Weirton Medical Center Medical Staff Scholarship, WV Higher Education Grant, Franciscan University Commuter Grant and Franciscan University Step in Faith Grant.

¯ Carly Alyssa Dowiak is the daughter of Joseph and Patricia Dowiak and a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Burgettstown. She has maintained a GPA above 4.0 all four years and graduated as salutatorian. She is a one-year letterman of soccer team, two-year letterman of the basketball and cheer teams and four-year letterman of the volleyball and track teams. She is a four-time state medalist in track and has competed in the state cheering competition the past two years. She was named to the All-Valley volleyball team her senior year. Dowiak has been awarded the St. Sebastian Medal by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. She was the Class of 2020 homecoming queen.

She is a member of the SADD and Interact clubs and National Honor Society and was voted student body vice president and National Honor Society secretary during her senior year. Dowiak volunteers at her parish and at the Weirton Geriatric Center. She works as a lifeguard and swim coach at Montour Heights Country Club and has received the University of Pittsburgh University Scholarship and the Charles M. and Thelma M. Pugliese Scholarship. She plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where she will cheer on Pitt’s cheer squad and major in biological sciences with a minor in economics in order to pursue a career in medicine.

¯ Dylan James Kolb, the son of James and Christina Kolb, graduated fourth in his class with a 4.36 GPA and was listed on the Distinguished Honor Roll. He has been a lifelong member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish.

Kolb will attend Fairmont State University and double-major in national security and intelligence and political science. He served as class treasurer and National Honor Society treasurer and was a member of the Interact Club, SADD Club, Pep Club and Geek Club. He played basketball during his freshman and sophomore years. He participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership program, West Virginia Mountaineer Boys State, National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security and the Judicial Scholars program. He was a member of the National Honor Society in his junior and senior years. He volunteers with the Wellsburg Lions Club and has worked at Williams Country Club Golf Course as a golf attendant. He earned several scholarships, including the WV Promise Scholarship, the Fairmont State Opportunity Scholarship Level 3, the Fairmont State Presidential Scholarship, the Fairmont State William White Scholarship, the Wellsburg Lions Club Earl McMahon Scholarship and the Charles M. Pugliese and Thelma M. Pugliese Charitable Foundation Scholarship.

¯ Kali Elizabeth Krynicki, the daughter of Lori Bargar and Ben Krynicki, graduated fifth in the class with a 4.3 GPA. She was voted Student Council secretary senior year and was a member of the Interact Club, SADD Club and Pep Club for four years and the National Honor Society in her junior and senior years. She is a four-year letterman of the girls soccer team, where she served as captain in her junior and senior years. In the freshman soccer season, the soccer team won the OVAC championship. She lettered in basketball freshman year, three years in track and participated in a bowling league, winning two state championships. During her freshman year, she took part in the Follansbee clean-up and volunteered at the Weirton Geriatric Center for the past two years. Her scholarships include the U.S. Bowling Competition Scholarship, the Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley Beulah T. Meyer Scholarship, the Eugene and Nell Petrucci Scholarship and the Franciscan University of Steubenville Commuter Grant. She plans to attend Franciscan University of Steubenville in the fall and double major in biology and psychology to pursue a career in psychiatry.

¯ Evan Connor Boniti, the son of Greg and Debbie Boniti, was a member of the distinguished honor roll and graduated with a GPA in excess of 4.3.

He was a member of the Interact, SADD and Art clubs, participated in Youth Leadership Weirton and was a member of the National Honor Society. During his senior year he was on the dean’s list at West Virginia Northern Community College. He is a four-year member of the OVAC All-Conference Academic Team and a three-year letterman of the basketball team, where he was named All-State honorable mention, third-team All-Valley and first-team All-OVAC as a junior and was named All-OVAC honorable mention as a senior. Boniti was named the male High School Heisman school winner during his senior year. He is a member of Saint Joseph the Worker Church, and was awarded the WV Promise Scholarship, the WVU Scholarship of Distinction, the Eugene and Nell Petrucci Scholarship, the Geneva Founder’s Scholarship, the Geneva Neighboring States Grant, the Geneva Christian/Homeschool Grant and the Weirton Termite League Basketball Scholarship. Boniti will attend Geneva College in the fall and will major in biology while pursuing a career in physical therapy. He will continue his basketball career there.

¯ Isabel Loch, the daughter of Katherine Lecker and Robert Loch, finished seventh in her class. She was the president of National Honor Society, the treasurer of Student Council and the president of the Geek Club and was an active member of the Prayer, Pro-life, and Interact clubs for four years. She is a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church and was active in creating a youth group there. She was a member of the Diocese of Wheeling Charleston Youth Board. Loch will attend Allegheny College this fall and major in English and minor in economics with plans to become a lawyer. She was awarded the Allegheny Trustee and Eugene and Nell Petrucci scholarships.

¯ Ava Loch, the daughter of Robert Loch and Katherine Lecker, graduated with distinguished honors ranked eighth in her class with a GPA of 4.3. Loch was awarded the Aquinas Medal and was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish. She participated in SADD for two years; Interact, Pro-Life and Prayer Clubs for four years; and was co-president of Interact Club and president of Prayer Club her senior year. She lettered in soccer for two years and was as a captain in her senior year. She volunteers with the Table of Hope and Lend-A-Hand for Appalachia. She also served on the diocesan Youth Board for two years, and danced competitively at Center Stage Dance for 10 years. Loch has had two poems published. She will attend Allegheny College in the fall, intending to major in chemistry and minor in global health studies. She was awarded the Allegheny College Trustee Scholarship, and the Eugene and Nell Petrucci Scholarship.

¯ Rachel Miller graduated ninth in her class with a 4.2 GPA. Her parents are Paul Miller and Denise Miller. She is a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and will attend West Liberty University in the fall and intends to have a career in the medical field. Miller was class secretary for four years and a member of the SADD and Interact clubs. She has been a member of National Honor Society since junior year, and is a four-year letterman on the cheering squad. She is a two-time Class A OVAC cheerleading champion and has competed at the WVSSAC state cheerleading competition. She received the WV Promise Scholarship, the West Liberty University Foundation Scholarship and the Eugene and Nell Petrucci Scholarship.

¯ Adelena Emma Backel is the daughter of Jason and Shannon Backel and graduated 10th in her class with a 4.18 GPA and distinguished honors. She is a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. She was co-president of Interact club, vice president of Pro-Life club and a member of the SADD and Geek clubs. She was a four-year letterman on the volleyball team, a three-year letterman on the softball team and a two-year letterman of the basketball team. Backel is the historian of the National Honor Society and participates in the Diocesan Youth Board. She volunteers for Lend-a-Hand of Appalachia and the Brooke/Hancock County Teen Court. She plans to attend West Virginia University in the fall. She earned the West Virginia Promise Scholarship, WVU Distinction Level 2 Scholarship and the Eugene and Nell Petrucci Scholarship.
