Weirton zoning board approves variances for signs
WEIRTON — The city’s Zoning Board of Appeals approved two sign variances for local businesses on Tuesday.
Weirton Fitness Complex, at 243 Three Springs Drive, requested its variance to allow a 158 square foot wall sign. Under the Unified Development Ordinance, that location would normally be allowed a maximum of 67 square feet.
No representatives for the business were present, Tuesday, but Zoning Board Chair Amanda Alexander said she had no objections.
“Looking at the pictures, I don’t see any problems,” Alexander said.
Planning and Development Director Jessica Gumm said the city administration also had no problem with the request.
“It’s just a logo that’s adding the extra signage,” Gumm said.
The board also approved a variance request for Steel Town Auto Sale, 3135 Main St., for a monument sign to be placed three feet from the sidewalk. The UDO requires a five-foot setback.
It was noted neighboring buildings sit closer to the street, with signs hanging over the sidewalk, limiting the visibility of the business.
