WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS -- Defending his office from another Democratic challenger, Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey won a third term Tuesday as the state’s top attorney.
According to unofficial results posted by the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office, Morrisey defeated his Democratic opponent, employment law attorney Sam Brown Petsonk, 280,993 (63.49%) to 161,573 (36.51%) with 25 counties reporting as of press time -- a margin of nearly 25 percentage points.
Morrisey celebrated those results Tuesday night from Gov. Jim Justice’s watch party at the Greenbrier Resort. He took to the stage shortly after Justice announced his own re-election.
“I’m humbled that the voters have entrusted in me another term,” Morrisey said. “We’re going to do some pretty incredible things. We’re going to try to work together to put West Virginia on that map in all the right categories. Thank you West Virginia for showing so much confidence in me.”
A request for comment from Petsonk was not returned by press time.
