WEIRTON -- A new support group for local grieving children has had to make changes to a planned open house as a result of the COVID pandemic.
Never Alone Kids, a collaboration between Never Alone WV and the Weirton Christian Center, will hold a virtual open house, via Facebook Live, starting at 6 p.m. today.
The open house was scheduled in recognition of Children's Grief Awareness Day.
As part of the virtual open house, children from the ages of 5 to 18 will be able to register for Never Alone Kids' first 10-week program, currently planned to begin in December. Those taking part in the open house will be provided with a link to a Zoom meeting to assist with registration, as well as to speak with the program's counselor and volunteers.
"In order to help kids feel like they are not alone in the way they are feeling, we have a dedicated group of volunteers ready to hold bi-weekly group meetings at the Weirton Christian Center for children of all ages, in separate peer groups for Elementary, Middle School and High School ages," Executive Director Kim Weaver explained. "If we need to, we will start digitally. But it is important for them to know that others their own age are grieving too."
In addition to Never Alone WV, the program has received support from Valley Hospice.
Each registered child will need to have an adult with them each week of the program.
In addition, information and a memorial craft will be available for distribution in the parking lot of the Weirton Christian Center for anyone interested.
Those with a child in their life who could use assistance dealing with the grief of losing a loved one, under any circumstances, are asked to contact the Weirton Christian Center at (304) 748-2353 or email Kim@weirtonchristiancenter.com.
