NEW CUMBERLAND -- All of Weirton's public schools are closed for the remainder of the week as a result of several confirmed COVID-19 cases involving both students and staff.

The closures were announced on a posting on the Hancock County Schools website Tuesday, explaining school officials were notified of the positive tests by the Hancock County Health Department.

"The Hancock County Health Department notified Hancock County Schools of several confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 which includes students and staff members," the notice reads. "In addition, there are a number of students and staff that have been advised to quarantine. The health department will begin contact tracing and will notify anyone that has been in contact with the positive individuals."

As a result of the cases, Weirton Elementary, Weir Middle School and Weir High School will be closed to students today and Friday, operating on remote learning. All after-school activities also are canceled.

One additional case of COVID-19 was reported at Oak Glen High School, involving a student. No closure had been ordered at the school.

"Hancock County Schools will continue to take appropriate actions, working in collaboration with the Hancock County Health Department, to protect the safety and well-being of our students and staff. To keep our schools open to our children, it will take our entire community following established COVID-19 protocols, such as wearing a mask, watching your distance, washing your hands and avoiding social gatherings," the statement reads. "We appreciate your ongoing support and commitment to the health and well-being of the Hancock County Schools community."
