WELLSBURG -- A Weirton man has been indicted on charges of murder and burglary for allegedly beating and killing a Wellsburg man in his home.
On Monday, the Brooke County Grand Jury returned indictments against Jeffrey Allen White, 27, of Apartment 1, 143 Lisa Court, and 22 others.
Wellsburg Police said on Feb. 20, Allen attempted to force open the front door of the Charles Street home of 69-year-old Daniel K. Gilchrist, leading Gilchrist to fire shots at the door in defense.
Police said White then removed an air conditioner from a window and after entering through it, struck and killed Gilchrist.
Also indicted was William Richard Dewall, 19, of 399 Cherry St., Wellsburg, for first-degree robbery and conspiring to commit the crime.
Wellsburg Police said Dewall and another man pulled up to a pedestrian in a vehicle on Marianna Street and Dewall allegedly pointed an air rifle at the pedestrian and demanded money from him. Police said the victim complied and Dewall, who they said wore a hooded sweatshirt to conceal his identity, fled.
The grand jury also approved a 10-count indictment against Keith Allen Wood, 68, of 141 Orchard Lane, Wellsburg, alleging sexual abuse of a minor in Wood's care.
Brooke County Prosecutor Joseph Barki III confirmed the indictment is based on the same allegations for which Wood was indicted in 2018 but said it supersedes the previous indictment because it contains additional charges.
Wood appeared for trial on Feb. 16 but it was declared a mistrial, following opening statements, because of a conflict between the attorneys involved over the inclusion of certain evidence.
Also indicted was Glenn Thomas Galloway Jr., 38, of 1016 Collins Memorial Drive, Chester, for second-degree robbery and kidnapping for attempting to take a vehicle occupied by a 74-year-old woman outside a business on American Way in Weirton.
According to police reports, the woman struggled against Galloway as he attempted to drive away with her and punched him, resulting in his fleeing on foot.
