WEIRTON -- Weirton Council has taken the final step to implement a temporary credit on the city's business and occupation tax.
Meeting in a special session Tuesday, council voted 7-0 in favor of the second reading of Ordinance 2150, amending the B&O tax "to give a one-time 10 percent tax credit to all B&O tax categories for the third and fourth quarters of fiscal year 2021."
No comments were offered by any member of council prior to, or after, the vote. The ordinance also received a unanimous approval of its first reading during council's regular meeting on March 8.
The move for a credit, which would be applied to a business' B&O tax billing, came about following a suggestion in February from Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh, who asked if it would be possible to offer exemptions to the B&O for the 2021-22 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The proposal was made as a way to provide some relief to businesses in the city as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions implemented by the state, including the temporary closure of some businesses.
In other business, council also unanimously approved a resolution for a change order to the city's contract with Kelly Paving Inc. for citywide milling and paving, in the amount of $254,286.
The funds would be used to program additional street paving to what already has been planned in the city.
Public Works Director Rod Rosnick, during a council work session earlier in the month, explained the bid received by the city for paving came in under what had been anticipated, providing the additional funds.
Rosnick had anticipated crews from Kelly Paving would begin work as early as Thursday.
