NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Board of Education gave its final approval on the 2021-22 school year calendar, announced a proposed property transaction would not be moving forward and addressed several personnel issues.
Following two public hearings and a survey, the board, Monday, approved the school calendar proposed by Superintendent Dawn Petrovich. During a series of meetings held last week, Petrovich explained she used responses from the survey to craft the calendar, which must still be approved by the state Board of Education.
Board President Danny Kaser explained a property issue, which had been listed for discussion and possible approval as part of Monday's agenda would not be going forward.
Kaser explained the issue had been raised during the board's April 12 regular meeting, when a resident proposed a property transaction between himself and the school district.
"That individual called me the next day and is no longer interested," Kaser said.
Among personnel matters, the board, Monday, unanimously agreed to, effective immediately, terminate the extracurricular contract of Amy Sherwood, assistant volleyball coach at Oak Glen Middle School. The decision followed a 70-minute executive session, with no additional comments made in the open session.
The board also approved the resignations of Anthony Veltri, assistant boys soccer coach at Weir High; the retirements of Willard Douglas, bus operator; William Loth, custodian at Oak Glen Middle; and Diane Rocchio, secretary at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center; as well as various transfers and contract renewals.
Director of Finance Joe Campinelli also provided the board with the March financial reports, noting tax collections currently are at 87.8 percent of their anticipated levels for the year. He said the virtual school costs for the county would be covered by CARES Act funds and announced the district would be using levy funds to complete an upgrade of security cameras in all of the county's schools.
"We've updated every phone system, every PA system and every camera in every school," Campinelli said.
