Weirton Zoning Board of Appeals approves requests for new deli
WEIRTON — Some new life is on its way for a vacant building in the Marland Heights section of the city.
The Weirton Zoning Board of Appeals, on Tuesday, granted two requests from Kensington Investment, allowing a conditional use permit and a setback variance for property at 3901 Brightway. The property previously was home to the Marland Heights Pharmacy.
Jessie Kreig, of Kensington Investment, explained he had requested the 0-foot setback in order to install at 20-foot-long and 3.4-foot-wide metal awning, which would hang over an existing right-of-way.
“There was an awning on the building,” Kreig said. “It was removed.”
Kreig has announced his plans to open a new deli in the former pharmacy building.
Planning and Development Director Jessica Gumm explained the right-of-way cuts through the building’s parking lot, resulting in the need for the variance.
The conditional use permit was necessary as the building is located in a R-1 district.
Zoning Board member Bill Frohnapfel made the motion for approval of both requests, which were approved 4-0.
“I’m not here to impede progress,” Frohnapfel said.
In other business, the Zoning Board also approved requests from:
John Lemal, 43 Highview Circle, for a variance allowing a 10-foot setback in the rear yard for a deck.
Ronald Ohalek, 337 Booker St., for a variance to permit an accessory structure on a separate lot from the principal structure. Ohalek explained he wants to build a shed on property he recently purchased located adjacent to his home.
