Hancock County’s school superintendent evaluation completed

By CRAIG HOWELL 2 min read

NEW CUMBERLAND -- Hancock County's superintendent of schools has met the standards of her position, according to the county board of education.

During their regular meeting Monday, members of the Hancock County school board completed their evaluation of Superintendent Dawn Petrovich, who has held the position for two years.

The results of the evaluation by the board were announced following an almost-40-minute executive session held near the end of Monday's meeting.

"All of the categories we are required to evaluate, she either met or exceeded standards," board President Danny Kaser said.

According to the West Virginia School Board Association, an evaluation of each county school superintendent is to be held at least annually, to review given objectives, student performance across the county, as well as areas such as community relations, leadership of the district and other determined areas.

Petrovich's evaluation was approved by a 4-0 vote by the board, and will be submitted to the state.

Kaser noted Petrovich's performance was especially notable given the additional challenges during the last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are pleased with your performance," Kaser said.

Under state code, the evaluation is to be held in executive session, with the board making a general public statement as to the results. Additional information, such as compensation and contractual terms may be released if both the board and superintendent consent.

In other business, Monday, the school board:

Recognized the 2019-2020 Golden Horseshoe winners from the county: Sophia Diaz of Weir Middle; and Kassie Gorby, Madalyn Roberts and Anthony McKay, all of Oak Glen Middle.

Agreed to convert a series of bonds from taxable to pre-taxable.

Approved recommendations for several personnel changes throughout the county. Board member Michelle Chappell asked if additional meetings would be needed to fill some of the recently vacated positions. Petrovich said, possibly in July or August, many of the posts will need addressed.

Agreed to order three 77-passenger, 2022 Thomas Saf-T-Liner C2 school buses, at a cost of $97,571 each, or $292,713 total.

Accepted five students for the 2021-22 school year.
