Hancock County Schools takes time to honor its employees

NEW CUMBERLAND - The Hancock County Board of Education took time Monday to recognize some of its top teachers and service personnel.
As part of their regular meeting, school board members honored the 2022 nominees and winners of county teacher of the year and service personnel of the year.
"We have an exciting night tonight," Superintendent Dawn Petrovich said.
This year's Hancock County Teacher of the Year is Cara McMahan, Spanish teacher at Oak Glen Middle School.
"I love going to school every day," McMahan said after her name was announced.
McMahan said she didn't expect to receive the award, which now puts her in contention for West Virginia Teacher of the Year.
Other nominees were Diana Johnston of Allison Elementary; Chelsey Stucin of New Manchester Elementary; Susan Greco of Weirton Elementary; Amanda Schey of Weir Middle; Trisha Enochs of Oak Glen High; Kayla Violet of Weir High; and Steven Fuscardo of the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.
Bill Wiseman, a 28-year employee of the school system's transportation department, was selected as county Service Personnel of the Year.
"Thank you. Thank you all," he said.
Other nominees were Judy Moore of Allison Elementary; David Slack of New Manchester Elementary; Mary Ann Taylor of Weirton Elementary; Sara Swiger of Oak Glen Middle; Cristal Cowden of Weir Middle; Lora Baumgarner of Oak Glen High; Tracy Rocknich of Weir High; Dee Chappell of John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center; and Brian Flanigan of the Central Kitchen.
It was noted each nominee goes through an application process, with information reviewed by a selection committee, and a vote from the county's teaching staff. Petrovich said the application gets more involved every year.
"I look at that," she said. "Each year, it gets more intense."
Board President Danny Kaser offered his appreciation to all of the nominees, comparing the operations of the school system to a pocket watch.
"You take the back off the watch, and there are all kinds of gears," Kaser said, noting each employee, no matter their position, is integral to the school system. "We appreciate all of you."
In other business Monday, the school board:
Approved numerous personnel recommendations, including almost 70 certified contract renewals and 46 classified contract renewals.
Agreed to advertise for an outside CPA firm to conduct audits of the 2022, 2023 and 2024 fiscal years
Approved the 2022-23 school year calendar
Approved several field trips for the Weir High and Oak Glen High tennis teams, and the creation of a dance team as a self-funded club at Weir High.
