Two teachers receive support through SONIC restaurant fundraising efforts

NEW CUMBERLAND — Two area teachers have received some assistance from national restaurant chain SONIC, in support of educational programs they offer their students.

Through non-profit organization DonorsChoose, which allows individuals to donate directly to public school classroom requests, and SONIC’s Limeades for Learning Initiative, a total of $1.5 million was raised for teachers across the nation.

Locally, Beth Morris and Michelle McHaffie from Oak Glen Middle School will receive a combined $403 in support of their programs.

Morris is receiving assistance for projects “Help Us Survive With I Survived Books,” and “Expanding Our Virtual World.” Both are geared toward the third through fifth grade levels.

McHaffie’s projects are “Motivational Snacks,” “Motion and Movement,” and “The Real World Continues” for sixth through eighth grades.

DonorsChoose listed numerous projects from teachers at Oak Glen Middle School looking for financial support.

“Limeades for Learning is an initiative that SONIC holds dear, and we’re proud to partner with DonorsChoose on this important work,” said Lori Abou Habib, chief marketing officer of SONIC. “Drink purchases at SONIC bring joy to our guests while supporting students and teachers in the classroom.”

SONIC donates a portion of drink proceeds to support local public schools through Limeades for Learning, in partnership with DonorsChoose. SONIC has donated more than $20 million to directly fund local education programs since 2009.

For those wishing to make an additional donation to a classroom project in their local community, visit DonorsChoose.org and donate to one or more of the thousands of public school teacher requests seeking support to provide students with educational resources.
