Weirton United Way hosts 40th Golf Classic

WEIRTON - It was a smaller field of participants this year, but representatives of the Weirton United Way are still hopeful this year's Golf Classic will have a big impact on the 2022 campaign.
The 40th Weirton United Way Golf Classic teed off Monday morning at Williams Golf and Country Club, bringing together 15 teams representing area businesses and civic organizations.
"It's a low turnout, but given we had a late start, we're really happy," United Way Board President Don Gianni Jr. said shortly before teams hit the fairways.
Gianni expressed his gratitude for everyone who stepped forward to play in this year's classic, many of whom, he noted, are regular participants who understand the importance of the Weirton United Way's fundraisers.
"Everybody here realizes they're here for the United Way and the agencies we support," he said.
Joyia Lytle, 2022 campaign chair, agreed, saying the support from the Weirton community was overwhelming. She applauded Gianni for his leadership leading up to the event, especially as the Weirton United Way currently is without a director.
"Watching Don take the lead has been inspiring," Lytle said.
Lytle also offered thanks to the volunteers who have stepped forward in recent weeks to make sure the Golf Classic was able to take place.
"Every single volunteer was 100 percent committed to making this happen," she said.
The Golf Classic is among the charitable organization's major fundraiser events each year.
The Weirton United Way was founded in 1936 and organizes its annual campaigns with the goal of raising funds to benefit 12 member agencies: the American Red Cross; Catholic Charities West Virginia; the Community Bread Basket; Dunbar Recreation Center; Healthways Inc.; Hancock County Sheltered Workshop; Hancock/Brooke/Ohio/Marshall RSVP; Hancock County 4-H Foundation; Mary H. Weir Public Library; Salvation Army of Hancock and Brooke Counties; Weirton Medical Center and Weirton Christian Center.
