Weirton celebrates Christmas on Main Street

WEIRTON -- Christmas came to Main Street in Weirton Saturday, with music, fun, special guests and the official lighting of the community's Christmas tree.
Crowds gathered throughout the afternoon in front of the Millsop Community Center, where live entertainment was available through local dance schools and bands, while vendors were stretched down along Main Street.
It culminated with the tree in front of the community center being lit, followed by a fireworks display.
"Three years in a row, and it just keeps growing," Assistant City Manager DeeAnn Pulliam said.
Christmas on Main Street is organized by Renaissance Weirton Corp., with support from Weirton Council.
Mayor Harold Miller, welcoming members of the Railingshafer family, who donated the tree, to join him and his family for the lighting, offered thanks to all of the municipal employees for their work, noting the dedication of those seen and unseen in the police and fire departments, Public Works, utilities and other departments.
"I just want to thank everyone," Miller said.
Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle performed duties as master of ceremonies throughout the day, also taking some time to provide a musical performance of his own in between some of the scheduled acts.
The afternoon began with a show by students from Dance by Hillary, followed by Casey Sisters Dance Academy, and Michele Dance Studio. Musical acts included Deja vu and Two Friends Trio, the Weirton Christian Center Signs of Hope and the Russell Sisters.
More than 40 vendors were set up, offering a variety of crafts and gift ideas, refreshments and more.
A synthetic skating rink was set up through the support of Cleveland-Cliffs Weirton, with inflatable attractions made possible by Summer's Enterprise and Weirton Medical Center. A train made its way up and down Main Street, offering rides, provided by Best You Boutique.
The Top of West Virginia Arts Council was set up at Summit Art Gallery, leading youth and adults in making gingerbread collage art projects and other activities, while the entries of a gingerbread house contest were on display inside the Weirton Room of the Millsop Center.
Collection boxes for the City of Weirton's toy and food drive, to benefit the Salvation Army, were set up at the Weirton Fire Department's headquarters station. The collection will continue through Dec. 1, with boxes at the fire department's stations, the Weirton Municipal Building, the Millsop Center, the Mary H. Weir Public Library and the Public Works building.
