Eat’n Park’s history brought to life in book

PITTSBURGH — The history of Eat’n Park Hospitality Group, the parent company of Eat’n Park Restaurants, Parkhurst Dining, Hello Bistro, the Porch and SmileyCookie.com, is colorfully brought to life in a new book, “The Story Behind the Smile.” The book traces the organization’s evolution from a single carhop restaurant to today’s multi-dimensional hospitality company.

“The Story Behind the Smile” is filled with behind-the-scenes stories and interviews with current and former team members. Readers learn how the round sugar cookie from company Chairman Jim Broadhurst’s youth went on to become an instantly recognizable icon. Other highlights include the role Isaly’s played in the start of Eat’n Park Restaurants; how the company’s famed strawberry pie was developed; the inspiration for new brand concepts, including Parkhurst Dining; and the company’s commitment to communities.

The book provides details about the heroic efforts Eat’n Park Hospitality Group took during the COVID pandemic to provide 1.3 million free meals to school students and community organizations. Photos from the company’s nearly 75 years bring the stories (and menu items) to life.

“Eat’n Park has had tremendous support through the decades from loyal guests and team members,” says Jeff Broadhurst, president and CEO, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group. “Our restaurants are a part of so many memories — from first dates to first jobs, from early morning business meetings to late night gatherings. Our goal with ‘The Story Behind the Smile’ was to share our story in a way that helps readers relive their favorite memories and anticipate the exciting future that lies ahead.”

“Eat’n Park is sewn into the fabric of Western Pennsylvania’s culture,” explains the book’s author, Lynn McMahon. “Although we all know Eat’n Park, the book explores so many dimensions — important and interesting — that will surprise readers.”

“The Story Behind the Smile” is published by Globe Pequot, the trade division of Rowman & Littlefield, and retails for $27.95. Books are available at all Eat’n Park restaurants, including the locations at 100 Mall Drive in Steubenville and 226 Three Springs Drive in Weirton, and on SmileyCookie.com.

A portion of the proceeds from books purchased at these locations will benefit the Free Care Fund at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Beginning Jan. 15, “The Story Behind the Smile” will be available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, independent book stores and online bookstores.
