Brooke County native Ken Reed, a former county commissioner, state delegate, businessman and pharmacist, has announced he will run for West Virginia Secretary of State as Republican in the 2024 election.
"It has been a great honor and privilege to serve as a county commissioner and state delegate," Reed said in a release. "Those experiences, along with three decades of running multiple businesses, provide me with unique skills that I believe make me the most qualified candidate to serve as West Virginia Secretary of State.
"I am very optimistic about the future of West Virginia," he added, "and plan to expand upon the hard work of the current Secretary of State, Mac Warner."
Warner is running for the Republican nomination for governor.
A 1986 Brooke High graduate, Reed graduated from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and began his career as a pharmacist in 1992. He met his wife Tally in pharmacy school and married in 1993. They have four children.
Reed began his career working as a chain pharmacist then went on to build his own small chain of pharmacies in and around the Eastern Panhandle. The Reeds currently own and operate the Canary Grill in Berkeley Springs and Reeds' Pharmacy locations in Martinsburg, Hedgesville, Berkeley Springs, Hancock, Maryland, and Berryville, Virginia.
Reed was elected to the Morgan County Commission in November of 2016, and then in 2020 was elected to serve as the Republican delegate for the 59th District.
When the districts were redrawn prior to the 2022 election, Reed and fellow Republican incumbent George Miller ran for the seat in the new 90th District. Miller defeated Reed 1,324-989.
"I look forward to using my conservative leadership experience as a county commissioner, West Virginia state delegate, and business builder to keep West Virginia moving in the right direction," Reed said.
