WEIRTON -- Long-discussed improvements to Starvaggi Memorial Pool could be moving forward in the near future.
The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation has released a request for qualifications seeking a firm "to complete a feasibility study for the replacement of the Starvaggi Memorial Swimming Pool vessel," according to a notice posted on the City of Weirton's website Wednesday morning.
The RFQ is aimed specifically at "planning, engineering and/or architecture firms with expertise in recreation facility development and construction," with experience in identifying current and future needs for a public water recreation facility, assessing the location, conditions and configurations, and identifying potential new elements for such a facility.
Interested firms are asked to submit an initial statement of interest, qualifications, experience and any need for clarification by 4 p.m., April 24, with a full response by 4 p.m., May 3.

Last fall, Weirton Council agreed to set aside $1.5 million of its allotment from the American Rescue Plan Act to assist the Park Board with various improvement projects.
Starvaggi Memorial Pool was first opened in 1968, gifted to the city by Starvaggi Charities. Officials have noted an estimated loss of 5,000 gallons of water per day when the pool is in use as a result of various problems with the existing vessel.
